Confessions of a Magpie

Guess how I spent my weekend?  As usual, I got sidetracked and ended up spending Saturday completely differently than I had expected to.  I blame it on the big box home improvement store.

Last week my office put out some fixtures that were no longer needed for our warehouse with “FREE” signs.  At the end of the day there were two filthy sad looking four shelf bookcases left.  Being me, I just had to take a look.  Lo and behold, underneath all of the dirt they were beautifully constructed solid black walnut and not the cheap particleboard stuff I was expecting.  I couldn’t resist.

I phoned Spouse and Bear and had them load yet another project in to the back of my truck to bring home.  Saturday morning it was off to the Cheapo Depot to pick up some white enamel.  I had decided to replace the old fashioned rounds on either side of Bunnie’s bed with fresh white bookcases that would give her some more storage with style.  Once I entered the store, I went into magpie mode.

Oooh, shiney!  Look, Tung Oil!  I’ll just pick this up too and freshen up the finish on Spouse’s bar.  What’s that over there?  Some mahogany tinted furniture oil!  I really should buy this and give the two ladderback chairs a going over today as well.  Hey! furniture tacks!  Those will be handy if I have any little repairs to make!

On I went stopping here and there and picking up bits and bobs all over the store before I finally left, thankfully remembering the paint I originally came in to buy.  In the end I cleaned, and oiled and polished and repaired and never exactly got around to even looking at the bookcases.  Well, I suppose that’s something to look forward to next weekend.

Unless of course, I go shopping for pretty baskets to put in the bookcases and I spy lovely jars or bookends or knick-knacks or or doo-hickeys or thing-a-ma-bobs…

I can’t go into the HD without strolling up and down every isle picking up things for this project or that one.

And sometimes, as I leave with more bags than I can carry, I leave without the very thing I went in for.

I do the same thing. I’ll end up working on three or four different projects, bit by bit, until I eventually finish everything.

Since I have seriously curtailed my spending, I no longer have this problem. But free stuff? Hard to turn down.

I get into big trouble at hardware stores, too. My eyes are ALWAYS bigger than my schedule allows.

I get that way too - there’s so many fun things that I really do, um, kind of need? Yes, yes I do need all this stuff.
I myself am a little excited tho those stores these days - Hubby and I have decided on our next big project in our house. Basically the first one since we moved in 6 years ago. YAY!

No, it’s not just you! I am positively dangerous in the Home Depot or Lowe’s. Right now I have the stuff for at least 12 projects. It’s just finding the time to do it and someone to keep the toddlers out of it.
