To Boldly Go Where No Mom Has Gone Before

I hope everyone had as nice a weekend as I had. My Mothers Day featured coffee, roses and the new Star Trek movie in IMAX. The show sold out four days before, so we made certain to get there 45 minutes ahead of time. When we arrived, we had to laugh at how homogeneous the audience was. It was just a sea of paunchy, pasty white men. And the women there? Were few and far between. I sat next to a middle aged man and his mother.

I am not a fan of the Star Trek movie franchise but this time around it’s different.  This time it is young and fun and filled with eye candy. Best of all, I was about to see it in digitally enhanced IMAX. Imagine a screen so big, a picture so sharp, you can see every pore on the actor’s faces, catch every detail of an elaborate backdrop, follow every zig-zag-ing  moment of a chase scene and not miss a single detail. By the time the movie started I was literally shaking with excitement.

And the movie? Did not disappoint. Oh Sylar/Spock! Despite being subjected to seeing you swap spit with an enormous dangling drool ball on the big screen, despite seeing you do the neck pinch, when it would have been so much cooler to see you slice the top off some Romulan heads, despite everything, you are still a fave.

I was thinking about how young these actors seem, when it occurred to me that I had no idea how old the original actors were when the series came out. Spock and Kirk were only 35. They seemed so old to me back when I was a kid.

hubby wants to see this movie and we’ll have to check it out after Paris. I’ll have to suggest the IMAX as a viewing option.
