This Week’s Works For Me Wednesday roundup asks for a “Best Back To School Tip”. Here’s one that often gets overlooked in the hustle and bustle of shopping for school supplies and clothing.
Check with your pediatrician or school nurse on what immunizations are required for your child. Now is the time to give your child the TLC he will need to get over the the pain, indignity and possible fever or adverse reaction he might have to school shots before the school year begins.
Many school districts have changed their immunization requirements from last year. You may be surprised to learn that your child is missing one of these newly required shots.
In addition, it may also be a good idea to ask your school nurse or local health department for information on immunization clinics offering free or reduced rates. Don’t assume that your family income will be too high to qualify. Even the need-based programs usually have a sliding fee scale that covers all children.
You should know local immunization programs usually run out of funding and/or supplies after the school year begins. Get in now, and you can save hundreds of dollars over your pediatrician’s rates.
And with the cost of school shoes, who couldn’t use savings like that?

Amen to that. And it’s a lot easier to schedule NOW than LATER.

Our school district decided that all the kids would have to have their immunization for this year taken care of by the last day of school *last* year! I did get my soon to be High Schooler in to the Dr. but he was actually up to date for what he needed. My daughter will need at least 3 for 7th grade so we’ll get her in this year (6th grade) around her birthday and get that taken care of.

That’s a good reminder. I’ve found that I need to keep really good records. Twice the school has asked me for permission to give my child shots that my records showed he didn’t need. Once they just hadn’t recorded them properly. The second time they wanted to give him a varicella booster, but he had already had chicken pox. It pays to stay on top of things!

I’m so glad Rosey is a good sport about shots - she gets two this year (her first year of school!) and the doctor’s office RESCHEDULED the morning of…
Ugh. Now I have to ask her to be brave AGAIN.
