Today was a typical Thursday. Lots of impossible deadlines and Stress with a capital S. Then something so wonderful happened it completely turned my day around. I have an office with a big picture window by the front door at my place of employment. Most afternoons around 4:00, I’ll put a saltine on the large stone we use as a doorstop. The birds enjoy it and I enjoy watching them as I finish up whatever tasks I’m working on.
Today I was buried in contract negotiation documents and vendor billing errors and general Thursday madness, when I heard a small tap. A little blackbird was perched on the stone looking expectantly through my window. I hurried to get him his cracker, placed it on his stone as usual and went back inside to watch the show. After he’d taken his cracker, I went back to work feeling a little less stressed.
About 20 minutes later, I heard another tap at the window. This time he wasn’t asking for anything. The blackbird had carefully placed a gift on the stone for me! From his spot nearby, he watched as I came outside and collected the beautiful sculpture of spider web, leaves and mud and feathers he’d brought to me. I thanked him with another cracker and took my precious gift inside. I haven’t stopped grinning since.
Isn’t it amazing how an act of kindness from an unexpected source can turn your whole day around?

It doesn’t surprise me that I would get sentimental and tear-eyed at your anecdote this morning. Sometimes the best gifts are directly from nature and they emerge when we need them the most, IF we keep our eyes open. We are idiots to think that nature doesn’t have a consciousness, and we are deaf to most messages. I love that you are so attentive to nature, in a way that keeps you sane! Thanks for this, it brought tons of memories of similar experiences and I got to appreciate them along with yours! *sniff* I’m such a tree-hugging hippie!
